Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has become the latest Republican to call for America’s preeminent infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci to face criminal charges over allegations he lied to Congress. Ms Greene, along with GOP Senator Rand Paul, claim Dr Fauci misled Congress over claims the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded grants to the Wuhan Institute of Virology to conduct controversial gain of function research. Gain of function research refers to when scientists make a virus more transmissible and or more virulent in order to conduct experiments. There is concern among significant proportions of the scientific community that the Wuhan Institute of Virology may have developed COVID-19 in its lab using gain of function research. The theory contends that the novel coronavirus was then accidentally leaked from the lab, causing the current global pandemic. Dr Fauci denied the claims during a heated exchange with Senator Rand Paul this week. “Senator Paul, you do not know what you are talking about, quite frankly, and I want to say that officially,” Dr Fauci said. He said scientists “up and down and down the chain” had concluded the NIH did not fund gain of function research in Wuhan. Speaking with Steve Bannon on Wednesday, US time, Ms Taylor Greene disputed this, claiming Dr Fauci has misled Congress over the NIH’s involvement with the Wuhan Institute of Virology. "How dare he use our tax dollars to create some sort of disgusting evil science that has killed so many people all over the world and fund it with our tax dollars? This man is an enemy to our nation," Ms Greene said. "He’s an enemy to the world because he played a major role in creating a bioweapon, which is COVID-19."
